The left one is from leaving a piece of EPDM on the pink foam -- the glazing that was over it was covered with shade cloth. The EPDM that melted into the pick foam appears to still be in fine shape.

I guess this is Taylor's way of making sure you don't try to use their thermometer much over its maximum scale reading.
