I have actually machined a couple stirling engines. Their main disadvantage is horsepower to weight ratio, not a good choice for the automotive industry and why the lack of engineering. My personal fovorite is the linear type of stirling with only one moving part. Below are a number of sites related to stirlings. A couple companies that sell them, not cheap. Most are incorporated into generator sets.
